The Surfer's Guide to Bali

Everything You Need to Know About Surfing in Bali

The Bali surfing scene started along the island's southern shores, where rolling waves and quiet, beautiful beaches evolved into the popular wave riders' playgrounds we now today. The origin of surfing in Bali is down to the first wave-riding visitors who discovered the incredible waves in the 1930s, and more have flown in being drawn by Bali's sun, sea and surf ever since.

Bali's surfer crowd comprises experienced riders and beginners who want a piece of the action. Pros can head to the outer reef breaks of the southern Bukit Peninsula, while newbies can opt for smaller waves in the lagoons. Bali is a great place to pick up the sport, with board rentals and surf schools widely available. Surf shops are also abundant, so you can easily source your wax, rashguards and any other gear you might need.

Around Sanur

Surfers head to Sanur, mainly targeting two of its favored spots, namely the Sanur Reef and the Tanjung Reef. November to April produces perfect right handers for Bali surfing, particularly on this eastern coast, which can result in lovely long,  hollow waves at high tides. Turtle Island or 'Pulau Serangan' as referred to by the locals, has a good reef break but can get a bit crowded if there's a big swell.

The swells usually are from the south with four to six-foot waves. Fun swells can be had at the Sanur rights especially during high tide. Serious swells do the trick here and always be aware of the reef.

Windsurfing

Windsurfing at Sanur Beach

Windsurfing happens to be more popular in Sanur than surfing. Its steady wind and constant currents create conditions perfectly suited to a combination of speed and maneuvers for windsurfing at Sanur Beach. For professionals, the wind at Serangan Island is always a few knots stronger than elsewhere and the reef breaks make ramp waves for better stunts.

The sport itself combines rules and aspects of both sailing and surfing but to steer a sail attached to a surfboard requires some serious skills. Sanur's waters are always suitable but year-round the dry season serves you the best.
